The Ferrari 308 GTB ushered in an era of V8s and now the 488 GTB is the seventh descendant.The 2017 Ferrari 488 GTB and Spider are just the latest in a family tree of mid-engined, V-8-powered Ferrari two-seaters that dates back decades.The 488 GTB name marks a return to the classic Ferrari model designation with the 488 in its moniker indicating the engine’s unitary displacement, while the GTB stands for Gran Turismo Berlinetta.
The new car not only delivers unparalleled performance, it also makes that extreme power exploitable and controllable to an unprecedented level even by less expert drivers. From its technical front end to the evocative curves that run down its flanks,the 488 GTB features very sculptural flanks. Thanks to the large signature air intake scallop divided into two secrtions by a splitter,dual grille opening which channels air into the two radiators new undertray, blown rear spoiler and enlarged active rear diffuser, it generates 50% more downforce than the 458 did.
The Ferrari 488 GTB packs the latest 3.9-litre turbocharged V-8, with its 90deg bank angle, flat-plane crankshaft, oversquare cylinder design and two IHI twin-scroll turbochargers mounted in parallel.The engine produces 660 horsepower at 8,000 rpm and 560 pound-feet of torque at 3,000 rpm,depending on which gear is selected in the Getrag seven-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox.
The 488 GTB’s cabin was designed to exude extreme sportiness without sacrificing occupant comfort.The 488s have a multi-function steering wheel, a control switch bridge and plush bucket seats.The new lighter, horizontally more compact dashboard features ultra-sporty air vents inspired by military jet air intakes.The boot at the front is a generous size, too, while the glovebox, door cubbies and cupholders, one of which usually becomes a receptacle for the key, make the 488 GTB more practical.
